October is Disability Employment Month. I am looking for persons from a wide range of fields who would be interested in possibiy presenting to high school students about their jobs. So far, I have three special education teachers interested in having people present to their classes
Also, if you know of any youth who might like to job shadow employees, please let me know. I will try to pair them with someone in our community who matches their interests.
Employers (public or private) are you willing to be a mentor for a few hours? You will educate students with disabilities about your business and what it takes to succeed. The student will join you at your place of employment for two hours during the month of October. Vice Mayor Cathy Murillo has agreed to have a student with a disability job shadow during her workday to raise awareness about employment for people with disabilities as part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. ILRC is organizing several events to highlight the benefits to employers of a diversified workforce while involving youth with disabilities in the real world of work.
People with disabilities make wonderful employees and ILRC’s Community Organizer, Jacob Lesner-Buxton is heading up a month long project to pair 5 to 10 students with disabilities with 5 to 10 employers for a two-hour ‘job shadowing’ experience. Coordination of the job-shadowing schedule will be handled through ILRC headquarters in Santa Barbara.
The U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) established the October tribute to raise awareness about employing people with disabilities and to celebrate their many and varied contributions to America’s workforce.
ODEP Assistant Secretary, Kathleen Martinez, wrote that this year’s campaign theme centers around three words…”Expect, Employ, Empower”…to urge communities to have higher expectations for our youth with disabilities and clearly conveying that an integrated and inclusive workplace benefits everyone.
