The Library is again offering training on how to tutor adults and children with dyslexia. The training focuses on Orton-Gillingham-based instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness.
This round of training will be completely ONLINE. Preregistration is REQUIRED, and I must have your registration (just your name and email address) no later than OCTOBER 7, 2017. The course begins Oct. 9 and runs through Nov. 3.
If participants wish, we will arrange for some shared viewing times at the Central Library. I know that many online learners appreciate the opportunity to view, meet, and talk with other people taking the same course! Please let me know if you’re interested in this option, and whether daytimes, evenings, or weekends will work best for you for a weekly meeting time.
The training is open to tutors, parents, and all other interested community members.
Here’s more about the course. It’s much like the in-person training we offered in May and June.
Overview of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
This four week class (20-30 total hours) is based on the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach. You will learn about multisensory teaching/learning, terminology used in the O-G method and V/A/TK strategies, phonemes of the English language, the importance of clearly isolating each phoneme, be given an overview of the seven syllable types, using real and nonsense words, syllable division, and word patterns.
