The Money Game
(handout that goes with videos)
Purpose: To learn coin values and coin combinations (and have fun doing so)
Learner has a coin purse with various coins and a 1 dollar bill.
4 quarters, 10 dimes, 5 nickels, 10 pennies.
The key thing to remember is you are modeling and TEACHING your learner what it is they need to learn. You are not TESTING them. You will note this in the video.
Help your learner your learner to sort out the money from the coin purse in order.
dollar, quarters, dimes and pennies.
Ask your learner for a certain amount of money. Give help as needed.
Then your learner asks you for a certain amount of money.
Examples:
Can you give me ten cents in pennies?
Can you give me 50 cents using dimes?
After each turn if you have paper and pencil, make a mark after each turn. Tally your marks when you are finished.
The key to this game is to make your learner feel successful each turn as they learn about coins and counting money!
You will be giving your learner the answers and helping them until they can do it on their own. Start small and easy!
Variations:
Your learner has a coin purse or Money Box
Have toys handy and allow learner to “buy” a toy to play with
Have learner “buy” their Video/TV time.
Example:
Learner “I want to play videos”
Parent “OK, go get your money box and give me 6 cents!”
If you keep it light and fun and do not make it stressful your learner will certainly have fun with this activity and learn about coin values and coin combinations in a fun ad practical way.
