Help protect funding for the Independent Living Resource Center.

Since 1976, the Independent Living Resource Center. (ILRC) has been providing assistance in persons with disabilities in the city of Santa Barbara, to live independently. Annually hundreds of residents of this city receive help finding housing, applying for social security benefits, advocacy and training to receive in home care, getting glasses and other assistive technology and a host of other services from our dedicated and knowledgeable staff.

Additionally, the ILRC has provided assistance to local business and government agencies in making their buildings and programs accessible. When business and government services are accessible, it helps not only individuals, but the local economy as well.

Now ILRC needs your help, in order to continue serving the city of Santa Barbara! For the past 3 decades, the ILRC has been a recipient of Community Development Block Grant funds, which is administered by the city of Santa Barbara. The grant covers the ILRC’s rent as well as helps us to operate many of our programs and services.

Recently, we learned that the Community Development Block Grant Task Force has made a recommendation of no funding for ILRC in the upcoming fiscal year.  If we lose this funding, our ability to provide vital services to the Santa Barbara will be severely limited.

Please help ensure that the ILRC can keep providing essential services to the community by coming to the city council meeting on Tuesday, March 25th at 6PM. On this date they will decide whether the committee recommendations for funding will be approved, and we want to be sure that they include funding for the ILRC.   We want to pack the gallery to show how crucial ILRC is to the Santa Barbara Community.

The meeting will be held at City Hall on, 735 Anacapa Street. Please join us at 5:15 for a rally outside in the plaza and stick around for the meeting.  If you are unable to attend or speak in our support, please send an email or letter to the Mayor and council members.

If you can come to the rally on March 25th and/or need accommodations for the event, or want help writing a letter please e-mail Jacob Lesner-Buxton or call him at 963-0595 extension 105.
